In
the Fall of 1996, frustrated with the lack of
comprehensive energy auditing software available
to the ESCO or Light Retrofitting Company, we
made the decision to take on the project of software
development in this much needed area.
Introducing
the Energy Auditing & Management System, I
am bemused to realize that nearly two years have
passed since that decision. I don’t know
(but, I doubt it) if I would have proceeded with
the project had I known of the necessary investment
of time and capital that it would take.
Others,
of course, had attempted — with varying levels
of success — to develop such software. On
our side was the rapidly evolving technologies
required to accomplish our mission. The perfection
of Hand Held Computer technology (our choice was
the Newton MessagePad 2100), along with enhanced
hand writing recognition software, worked to our
benefit.
Ever
increasing microprocessor speeds, hard drive and
RAM capacities, and cross-platform (MacIntosh-PC)
software capabilities, were also helpful. Finally,
the exponential development of the Internet —
with its’ capability to provide a highway
upon which one could transfer data (such as a
Lighting Audit!) over large distances — was
compatible with our vision.
Initially,
our goal was modest (compared to where the project
eventually led). Simply stated, we wished to replace
the old clipboard and paper forms used for the
data gathering in the auditing stage, with a Hand
Held (or ‘Palmtop’) Computer.
Not
surprisingly, this relatively straight forward
objective proved to be more problematic than at
first conceived. Hence, the development time of
nearly six months, with a product that was nearly
market ready before the suggestion was made to
incorporate other aspects of the Auditing and
Management functions into the software.
Although
we’d managed to develop a software program
for the accumulation of field data (the ‘Lighting
Audit’), and the transfer — or downloading
— of gathered data into a laptop or desktop
computer, we had virtually ignored functions subsequent
to the acceptance of the proposal (or ‘audit’).
Specifically,
experts consulted on the subject suggested that
we incorporate the capability to ‘manage’
the data, after its’ loading into the laptop
or desktop computer. ‘Manage’, we learned,
can cover a broad range of functionality. From
the issuance of Work Orders to Invoicing; Parts
Requests and Inventories to Purchase Orders; Bills
of Materials to Job Tracking; and Employee Hours
and Quality Control, this so-called ‘management’
software was envisioned to provide a seamless
continuity for management of all aspects of the
project.
Finally,
after nearly two years and literally hundreds
of thousands of dollars, the Energy Auditing &
Management System is completed — and available
for use by lighting professionals worldwide. For
