New is Better!

As I peeked out into the auditorium from behind the on-stage curtains, I saw that seats were filling rapidly with but a few more minutes remaining before my scheduled speech.

I'd been working for years for this opportunity to address this particular audience. I recognized many of the faces as the attendees took their seats. Faces of those that I'd dealt with one-on-one over the past years. Most of the faces, however were strangers.

Facilities Managers, School Facility Managers, Project Engineers, Store Planners, Housekeeping Directors, Property Managers. These were the positions of most of those now settled in their seats and waiting to hear my oratory. I hoped that I would be able to get through it this time.

"Ladies and Gentlemen," a disembodied voice could be heard over the PA system, "the Founder of National Ceiling, Wall & Lighting Network, Caruso Care's Scott A. Caruso".

Stepping to the podium, I wasted no time with preamble but hit the ground running. "Thank you for coming today. As you are aware, the title of my talk today is, "New is Better." New is, in fact, better for several reasons, not the least of which is that it's new.

"As a nation we find ourselves facing economic woes that challenge our abilities to respond with vigor. Experience has taught us, one way in which we can do this is to consume.

"Most of you in the audience are employed by corporations that behave in ways that are not conducive to the rapid economic recovery of our country through consumption versus economy. Specifically, by a show of hands, how many of your companies regularly clean the carpeting in you facilities?" Nearly everyone's hand went up. "How many clean the drapes? The restrooms? The wastebaskets?"

As I went from one category to the next, the hands remained in the air and I finally felt that I'd made my point. "Now, imagine, if you will, that instead of cleaning that carpet when it got significantly soiled, you were to remove it and replace it."

I could hear murmurs here and there in the audience and saw people begin to shift in their seats at this proclamation. I knew that I'd better continue on before I lost them.

"To take this further, imagine that the drapes were removed and replaced...not cleaned. The toilets were periodically replaced instead of cleaning them. And on and on."

I now heard laughter from more than one source and one heckler shouted out, "How 'bout the windows?"

I knew that I shouldn't show weakness and rejoined with, "The windows too!" Whew, tough crowd.

"Imagine, then, that this was the way that business were conducted in your major corporations. Imagine the plumbers that would be required to install these new fixtures in your restrooms. Imagine the increase in production in the fixtures manufacturing facilities throughout the country. Multiply this times the areas of your facilities that you now clean and times the number of your companies."

I knew that I must sound like a country preacher, because I could hear the fervor in my voice. I could feel the perspiration on my brow and running down my spine beneath my dress shirt and suit coat. I tried to gather my thoughts for what I hoped would be an inspirational finish as I watched in panic as several of the attendees left the auditorium in disgust.

As my alarm clock jolted me out of sleep, my nightmare dissolved into a new day of trying to explain that new is not better -- for carpet, drapes, blinds, restrooms or, more saliently, to acoustical ceiling tiles.  My company cleans and restores acoustical ceiling tiles through our exclusive "recycling-in-place" process for dirty ceilings.  As the last shreds of my bad dream disappeared in the light of day, I told myself that, someday, some way, I would prevail in my attempt to spead the message of Clean It, Don't Replace It to those responsible for their companies' ceilings.  I knew, in the end, that it just made good sense.
